DESCRIPTION: Massachusetts, 8 day, weight brass movement patent or banjo timepiece.
CONDITION: Mahogany and gilt banjo case in an old finish. There is a repair on the latch side of the head. The gilding on the throat and door frame is in nice condition. One of the balls on the bottom bracket is replaced as it is smaller than the rest. Original painted dial is attached to the case with three L-turns. The dial is signed: "Babcock, Watchmaker, Prov. R.I. ". George Wanton Babcock (1814-1883) was an engraver, jeweler and watchmaker working at Providence by the 1850s and until his death. He probably retailed this clock, but did not make it. Original hands. Tablets have some age, but look to be replaced. The bottom tablet is also cracked.
